Epic Ballet
William Forsythe is one of the most influential figures in contemporary dance today. And his ambitious multi-act postmodern Impressing The Czar (1988) is one of his best works. Impressing The Czar takes a centuries-spanning look at how dance, art and culture have evolved till today. It begins with an opulent historical scene filled with well-known figures and cultural references. But Forsythe gradually deconstructs this to show how long-held traditions have given way to new and sometimes nihilistic forms.
The second act, titled In The Middle, Somewhat Elevated, is the ballet's most famous piece, frequently performed by dance companies around the world. And its finale combines electronic beats and schoolgirls dancing wildly and unrhythmically to suggest the total abandonment of artistic traditions.
Impressing The Czar plays at the Esplanade Theatre at 8pm on March 15 and 16, 2019. Tickets from Sistic.
