A JOINT partnership between SPTel and SpeQtral was selected by the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore to build Singapore’s first nationwide quantum-safe network, National Quantum-Safe Network Plus (NQSN+).

SPTel is a joint venture between ST Engineering : S63 0% and SP Group while SpeQtral is a spin-off from the Centre for Quantum Technologies, which is hosted by the National University of Singapore. The company designs and manufactures satellite-based quantum communication systems.

On Wednesday (Nov 15), SPTel said the award of the NQSN+ project builds on both partners’ successful trials in quantum-secure networks, which were conducted on SPTel’s diverse fibre network in 2022.

It expects the collaboration with SpeQtral to advance the development of a “robust and resilient” NQSN+, while fostering a safer digital environment for both public and private sector organisations in Singapore.

Quantum-safe networks are designed to guard against quantum computer-enabled attacks, as encryption keys are sent with photons along existing fibre optic cables.

When completed, NQSN+ will be an interoperable network fortified with quantum encryption capabilities.

This will provide unparalleled data protection for critical government and commercial applications, said SPTel.

The company added that the network will utilise quantum cryptography to “achieve unprecedented levels of security” by harnessing the inherent properties of quantum particles for data encryption. Such a move is expected to ensure the secure transmission of sensitive information as well as enhance security against cryptographic attacks.

SPTel and SpeQtral will also collaborate with industry partners to strengthen the overall security of NQSN+, such as with ST Engineering in the area of quantum-ready encryptors. Other partners include Toshiba Digital Solutions for its quantum key distribution system.

SPTel chief executive Titus Yong said he expects the NQSN+ to set new benchmarks in data protection and fortify Singapore’s critical infrastructure.
