Excellence in Energy, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management (Honourable Mention)

ST Engineering (Commercial and defense aerospace business) “Under the twin efforts of building up a culture of sustainability that is fully supported by strong and committed leadership, initiatives that were well thought through could, hence, quickly get adopted and implemented. Such was the case when members of the Sustainability Steering Committee made the proposals to the management for solar PV deployment at our three main aerospace sites in the Singapore operations over six years ago, and for enhancement to be made to the work processes at our Engine tests cells to reduce and optimise jet fuel consumption, as examples. Following the successful implementation of solar PV at all our three aerospace sites, we increased our usage of renewable energy to 30 per cent of our total annual energy consumption, which reduces our GHG emissions by up to 4500 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) annually.” Jeffrey Lam Wai Meng, president of Commercial Aerospace, ST Engineering

Best Practices (Honourable Mentions)

ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Project title: Singapore Chemical Plant (Olefins) Turbine Extraction Optimization Project “At ExxonMobil, we actively identify opportunities to optimise energy as part of our Global Energy Management System (GEMS). The turbine extraction optimisation project is an example of how GEMS was used in identifying an energy gap closure opportunity through a steam system review and closed using engineering innovation, resulting in improved overall energy efficiency of the site. In 2022, ExxonMobil announced its ambition to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions for its operated assets by 2050. In Singapore, we are working on this emission reduction roadmap to be able to achieve that for our facilities here.” Andrew Lee, energy analyst, Singapore Chemical Plant

PCS Project Title:Innovative approach of Stabiliser Feed Preheater installation for carbon abatement “Energy conservation is one of the pathways for PCS’s sustainability goal. The successful implementation of this waste heat recovery project, was a demonstration of our continual efforts in uncovering any viable energy improvement opportunity, including overcoming limited space availability via adoption of innovative approach such as using a compact heat exchanger.” Francis Tan, Energy Manager

Shell Singapore Project Title: Flaring reduction program at Shell Energy & Chemicals Park Singapore, Bukom “The Flaring Reduction Programme at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore on Bukom demanded innovation and a departure from conventional practices. It successfully transitioned from a reactive to a proactive flaring reduction strategy, gaining extensive support from employees across the site. The energy team adeptly addressed challenges with precision and agility, bolstering their confidence through early achievements. This successful programme is an important step to achieve Shell’s target of being a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050.” Parth Srivastava, Senior Reliability Engineer

Alcon Singapore Manufacturing Project Title: Energy saving through Axial fan “Encouraging a culture of continuous improvement in energy efficiency helps Alcon adapt to changing energy markets, regulations, and technologies, making it more resilient in the face of environmental challenges. The initiative reinforces Alcon’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency as core values. It sends a clear message that these principles are integral to the company’s culture and mission.” Panicker Shreekumar, Senior Manager (Critical Systems)

Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) (Honourable Mention)

Progress Galvanizing “After we installed networked meters and data loggers, we were able to effectively analyse energy data as part of the ISO 50001 energy review. This also allowed us to deploy an energy management information system. Once we were able to identify not only the poorly performing energy consuming equipment, but also the areas of the process where energy is lost, we were able to quantify these opportunities for energy efficiency improvement and launch the appropriate energy performance improvement projects.” Joyce Lee, Operation /Energy Manager

Outstanding Energy, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Manager (Honourable Mentions)

SPH Jurong Property Name of Energy Manager: Narasimhan Jeyakumar “Over the course of my 24-year tenure at SPH, I have had the privilege of spearheading significant initiatives in energy management within the Print Centre. My proudest achievements as an energy manager stem from my role in forming the Energy Management Team, comprising personnel from various departments, to collaboratively reduce energy consumption and enhance our energy performance. Demonstrating unwavering commitment to SPH’s energy policy and goals, I initiated and led several projects starting in 2014, many of which are ongoing. These initiatives include the implementation of an Energy Monitoring System (EMS) for precise oversight of our systems’ energy performance and the installation of digital energy meters.” Narasimhan Jeyakumar Assistant vice-president (Engineering), Production Division, SPH Print Centre

3M Innovation (Singapore) Name of Energy Manager: Steven Toh “My proudest achievement is completing major projects with results delivered over the years. For example, in 2018, I led the implementation of a 2.2-megawatt photovoltaic rooftop solar system, a major undertaking. I then continued to drive the Singapore Tuas plant to implement more major energy projects, such as retrofitting the central chiller plant in 2019 and the central air compressor system in 2021. Both of these projects improved system performance and reduced energy consumption. In 2019 and 2021, I also implemented a smart energy monitoring system with a live data analytics dashboard, which has helped us to identify and address energy inefficiencies. These initiatives have resulted in significant energy savings, and the Singapore Tuas plant was certified under the ISO 5001 standard for energy management in 2022.” Steven Toh, Facility/Energy Manager
