GE2020: PAP retains Tanjong Pagar GRC with 63.13% of votes

THE People's Action Party (PAP) won 63.13 per cent of the vote for the Tanjong Pagar group representation constituency (GRC) over the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).

PAP's vote share of 63.13 per cent translated to 78,079 votes cast for the party, while 45,609 votes were cast for PSP that represented 36.87 per cent of valid votes cast. The number of spoilt votes totalled to 1,930.

There were 125,618 votes cast by electors in this GRC.

The PAP slate comprised Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing, 50, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Indranee Rajah, 57, Joan Pereira, 52, Alvin Tan, 40, and Eric Chua, 41. The PSP fielded Wendy Low, 43, Harish Pillay, 60, Michael Chua, 55, Abas Kasmani, 67, and Terrence Soon, 29.

In his thank-you speech, Mr Chan said: "As we promised, in the next five years we will continue to serve you, to take care of you, to take care of Tanjong Pagar and take care of Singapore. Now that the elections are over, it's time for us to unite and make sure that together we get out of the Covid situation as soon as possible to make sure that in the coming months, we will be able to save as many jobs and as many businesses as possible. And then we will also put in place the long-term plans for us to overcome the challenges in the years ahead."

The PAP won 77.7 per cent of the votes in Tanjong Pagar in GE2015 while their opponents, the Singaporeans First (SingFirst) party, had 22.3 per cent of the votes cast. SingFirst was led by former presidential candidate Tan Jee Say. Mr Tan dissolved his party in June. He is this year running as a candidate under the Singapore Democratic Party to contest Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.
