AS PART of Singapore Aquatics’ 85th anniversary celebrations, a Hall of Fame will be launched in 2024 to honour athletes who helped make aquatics Singapore’s top sport.

This was announced on Sunday (Oct 15) during a “Farewell to Toa Payoh” party to commemorate the closure of Toa Payoh Sport Centre.

Sunday’s event brought together past and present aquatic athletes, including Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling and swimming legends Ang Peng Siong and Patricia Chan.

Chan, who also chairs Singapore Aquatics’ Legacy Council, said that the Hall of Fame will go beyond just recognising the contributions of inductees.

“It is not just to pay tribute to our sporting heroes. More importantly, it is a way for us to tell our stories to the future generations,” she said during the event.

Singapore Aquatics is the first Singapore National Sports Association with an initiative to honour heroes in its community. Induction into the Aquatics Hall of Fame will be reserved not only for aquatic athletes, but will also be open to sports administrators, coaches and members of the media. Inductees, however, will have to be Singaporeans or Singapore permanent residents.

A nomination panel has been formed to select the inaugural batch of inductees, the association said.

Singapore Aquatics president Mark Chay said that initiatives such as the Hall of Fame will help the association build a close and inclusive community that brings aquatic athletes from all backgrounds and generations together.

This is an important step for Singapore Aquatics as it turns 85, he added.
