SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) and its budget arm Scoot are aiming to replace 5 per cent of their total fuel requirements with sustainable aviation fuels by 2030.

On Tuesday (Nov 14), both carriers said discussions are ongoing with fuel suppliers on opportunities to purchase sustainable aviation fuels, with further details to be announced at the appropriate time.

The group said it has been working closely with both Singapore and global partners over the last few years, to better understand the operational and commercial considerations that would support the greater supply and adoption of sustainable aviation fuels.

Given their potential to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent on a life-cycle basis compared to conventional jet fuel, sustainable fuels are critical to the group’s goals of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, said SIA and Scoot.

“The greater use of sustainable fuels will be a key lever in our decarbonisation strategy, which includes our continued investment in new-generation aircraft and greater operational efficiencies,” added SIA chief executive Goh Choon Phong.

“We will continue to find opportunities to work together (with partners and stakeholders) to support the greater production and use of sustainable fuels in the airline industry as well as other decarbonisation initiatives.”

SIA and Scoot’s latest commitment follows the recent completion of a 20-month pilot by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Temasek-backed investment platform GenZero and SIA.

Under the pilot, 1,000 tonnes of neat sustainable aviation fuels were imported and blended in Singapore before they were uplifted via Changi Airport’s fuel hydrant system on SIA and Scoot flights.

This generated 1,000 sustainable aviation fuels credits that were offered to corporates and freight forwarders, of which about two-thirds were sold during the pilot.
